WITHIN TEN MINUTES of her call, Jack was picking the lock to the Morgans’ back door and sneaking into a darkened house. Dark save for the light shining through a doorway at the end of the first-floor hall. The house was quiet except for some championship snoring coming from up the polished hickory staircase. Alex had indicated her father was asleep, that she was rattled and that calling him had been a mistake.
By damn, he was going to get some answers to something in this town. Moving toward the light without making a sound, Jack familiarized himself with the layout of Alex’s house, and found himself standing in the doorway to her bedroom.“It was nothing,” my ass. Alex was pacing at the foot of an old-fashioned, white wrought-iron bed, wrapped up to her chin in a man’s robe, her lips moving in some kind of sotto voce mantra or curse he couldn’t understand.
Although he had no desire to frighten her further, it was even more important not to wake her father or alert the neighbors with a startled scream, so Jack crept up behind her and reached around to cover her mouth with his hand.
Her reaction was instantaneous. A shriek into his palm, an elbow to his gut, bare feet knocking against his shins. Damn, that woman packed a punch. He cinched his arm around her waist, pulling her off her feet and into his body, flashing back to that night in Nashville.
He pressed his lips against her ear, gentling her with a voice that was as reassuring as he knew how to make it. “Easy, sweetheart. It’s me. Shh. Don’t cry out.”
The fight ended as quickly as it had begun. When she gave an acknowledging nod, he eased his hold and lowered her to the floor.
“Jack?” As soon as he released her, she spun around. In the course of their struggle, the robe had gaped open, revealing one of the two most beautiful breasts he’d ever seen. But before he could note more than how the rosy circle of color at the tip stood out against her milky skin, she quickly covered herself, clutching the robe together at her neck and waist. “How did you get in here?”
He frowned. “I’ve been a cop for a lot of years. I’ve learned a few things. Now we need to have a conversation. Tell me about that call. And who’s watching? You can’t—”
“I’m just glad you’re here.”
She walked straight into his chest and the lecture died on his lips. As she wrapped her arms around his waist and nestled her cheek against him, the temper and fear that had carried Jack from the track to her bedroom dissipated. Her breasts pillowed against his stomach, the scent of flowery bath oils teased his nose. For one noble moment he tried to push her away. “Sweetheart, I’m a mess.”
She didn’t seem to care. “I’ve never had a man dash to my rescue before.” Her lips moved against the cotton of his cold, damp T-shirt like a warm caress against his skin.
